But LTC pharmacy delivery doesn't happen on a map.
A facility may stop accepting deliveries at 7:00 PM. Another may require an RN signature. One stop may take five minutes while another takes 25. And a STAT medication can change the route after the driver has already left.
For LTC pharmacies, the best route isn't necessarily the one with the fewest miles. It's the one that gets the medications where they need to go within the requirements of each delivery.
Mileage Doesn't Tell You What Happens at the Facility
Traditional route planning focuses heavily on geography: put the stops in the order that minimizes miles and drive time.
That's important, but it doesn't account for what happens when the driver arrives.

How do we get the urgent medication delivered without unnecessarily disrupting everything else already scheduled?
The answer might be to insert the STAT into an existing route. It might require changing the route sequence. Or it may make more sense to send another driver.

Routine delivery benefits from planning and route density. STAT delivery requires responsiveness.
A strong delivery operation needs to support both.
The Best Route Is the One That Works in the Real World
Mileage still matters. So does drive time.
But neither tells the whole story.
For LTC pharmacies, route performance is affected by where the facilities are, when medications are ready, when facilities can receive them, how long each handoff takes, and what happens when an urgent order enters the operation.
That's why the shortest route isn't always the lowest-cost route either. A few additional miles may be far less expensive than a missed facility window, returned medication, redelivery, or hours of pharmacy staff time spent resolving a problem.
